Boston, MA: Boston Strategic Partners, Inc. (BSP) executives Dr. Fabian D’Souza, President, Dr. Fred Peyerl, Partner, and Dr. Sibyl Munson, Principal, delivered presentations at the recently concluded Strategies in Biophotonics Conference 2014 organized between September 9-11, 2014. Strategies in Biophotonics Conference and Exhibition is the only event dedicated to facilitating product development and encouraging commercial success of optics- and photonics-based biomedical technologies.
In his presentation, ‘ABCs of reimbursement: Impact for the biophotonics market’, Dr. D’Souza discussed the US healthcare reimbursement system encompassing the types of reimbursement, payors, coverage, coding and costs and their influence on the biophotonics industry. Additionally, Dr. D’Souza led a panel discussion with medical practitioners including John Frangioni, MD, and Penny Ford-Carleton, RN, MS, on meeting their needs with optics and photonics technologies.
Dr. Munson’s talk, titled ‘Regulatory Pathways for Biophotonics-based System Developers’, provided an overview along with critical guidance on the three classes of regulatory control and how FDA reviews medical devices. Her talk also provided information on Investigational Device Exemptions (IDE), Premarket Notification (510(k)), substantial equivalence, Premarket Approval (PMA), the Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE), and post-approval studies. Dr. Peyerl explored the critical concepts of business modeling, development of distribution channels, decisions on pricing, and marketing for best impact in his presentation titled ‘Business Modeling for Disruptive Developers’.
“We will be reporting on the sessions in BioOptics World during the coming months, ” said Stephanie Fieldman, Conference Manager, PenWell Corp. ” I do think that the conference fills a need in helping developers of photonics-based systems reach the “moral imperative” of translating their discoveries to the market. I look forward to the next one,October 6-8, 2015.”
About PenWell Strategies in Biophotonics
Strategies in Biophotonics is a two-day conference and exhibition powered by the industry experts at BioOptics World and its parent company, PennWell Corporation addressing critical but often-overlooked issues that technology innovators must address in order to succeed in efforts to commercialize biophotonics-based systems. The program highlights key examples to present clinical and scientific needs, demonstrates how biomedical optics and photonics can address them, and provides a platform to discuss what needs to happen for the technologies to reach that goal.
Boston Strategic Partners, Inc. is a leading global healthcare consulting firm offering services to the life sciences industry in the areas of Business and Clinical Strategy, Health Economics and Outcomes research (HEOR) and Medical & Technical Communications.
