(BSP) executives Dr. Fabian D’Souza, President, Dr. Fred Peyerl, Partner, and Dr. Sibyl Munson, Principal, delivered presentations at the recently concluded Strategies in Biophotonics Conference 2014 organized between September 9-11, 2014. Strategies in Biophotonics Conference and Exhibition is the only event dedicated to facilitating product development and encouraging commercial success of optics- and photonics-based biomedical technologies.
In his presentation, ‘ABCs of reimbursement: Impact for the biophotonics market’, Dr. D’Souza discussed the US healthcare reimbursement system encompassing the types of reimbursement, payors, coverage, coding and costs and their influence on the biophotonics industry. Additionally, Dr. D’Souza led a panel discussion with medical practitioners including John Frangioni, MD, and Penny Ford-Carleton, RN, MS, on meeting their needs with optics and photonics technologies.
Dr. Munson’s talk, titled ‘Regulatory Pathways for Biophotonics-based System Developers’, provided an overview along with critical guidance on the three classes of regulatory control and how FDA reviews medical devices. Her talk also provided information on Investigational Device Exemptions (IDE), Premarket Notification (510(k)), substantial equivalence, Premarket Approval (PMA), the Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE), and post-approval studies. Dr. Peyerl explored the critical concepts of business modeling, development of distribution channels, decisions on pricing, and marketing for best impact in his presentation titled ‘Business Modeling for Disruptive Developers’.
